Michael Welshhans Scholarship Update
Scribe: Peter Parker
Beth Brownell first introduced Dr. James Feeney from The College of St. Rose who administers the scholarship and reintroduced Bunny & Jim Weshhans to the club.Beth then introduced our speaker, the first recipient of the Michael Welshhan Schlolarship, Denise Bambinelli, who is a speech and Language Pathologist at the Wildwood School. She is a recent graduate of the Communication Sciences & Disorders program at the College of St. Rose, receiving her MS in August 2017. Denise began enthusiastically by telling us that as a student she learned to use technology as a way to assist in speech and hearing therapy. She then went on to describe her trip to Minneapolis for a speech therapy conference. She told us that the reason she was wearing two name tags: one was for Michael Whelshhans and the other was hers. She said that she wanted Michael to be at the conference in spirit because without him she would not be going to the conference. There were sessions on self evaluation in the classroom, a make it & take it workshops, which had a “McGyver” quality to them. Some of the items used to make things to help the students were double-sided carpet tape, twist ties, velcro and plastic pieces. There was a session about how to use a green screen to make a video of a student flying or doing something else…a session on using the Apple Plaground which included using a 3D printer, reading topics, creating e-books as an augmented way to communicate, and finding & submitting grants. Denise did intersperse her discussion of the conference with comments about her non-conference activities and the friends and contacts she made during the conference. She concluded by telling us that she learned many things that she will be able to use in the classroom and colleages that she can contact for help and collaboration. Denise thanked the Club for our particpation in the Michael Welshhan Schlolarship.
